When you look at the odds for an NFL game, a baseball matchup, or a UFC fight, it’s easy to think the numbers simply show how much you can win. But odds actually tell a deeper story — they reflect the sportsbook’s assessment of how likely an outcome is to happen. To make more informed bets, it’s important to understand how odds work and what they really say about probabilities.

What Are Odds?

Odds represent the relationship between your stake and your potential payout. In the United States, you’ll most often see American odds, which can be either positive or negative numbers.

  • Positive odds (e.g., +200) show how much profit you’d make on a $100 bet.
  • Negative odds (e.g., -150) show how much you need to bet to win $100 in profit.

For example, if you bet $100 on a team at +200, you’d win $200 in profit (and get $300 total back) if they win. If you bet on a favorite at -150, you’d need to risk $150 to win $100. Behind these numbers lies a probability estimate — the lower (or more negative) the odds, the more likely the sportsbook believes that outcome is.

Converting Odds to Implied Probability

To understand what odds really mean, you can convert them into an implied probability — the sportsbook’s estimate of how likely an event is to occur.

The formulas are:

  • For positive odds: Probability = 100 / (odds + 100)
  • For negative odds: Probability = -odds / (-odds + 100)

So, +200 odds imply a 33.3% chance (100 / 300), while -150 odds imply a 60% chance (150 / 250). The higher the implied probability, the more confident the sportsbook is in that outcome.

However, keep in mind that sportsbooks build in a margin — a built-in profit that ensures the total probabilities across all outcomes add up to more than 100%. That’s how they make money regardless of the result.

The Sportsbook Margin – The Hidden Edge

Sportsbooks earn their profit by slightly adjusting odds so that the total implied probabilities exceed 100%. This extra percentage is known as the vig or juice.

For example, in an NBA game, you might see:

  • Team A: -110
  • Team B: -110

Each side implies a probability of about 52.4%. Together, that’s 104.8%. The extra 4.8% is the sportsbook’s margin. It means that even if you bet both sides, you’d lose a small amount over time — that’s the house edge at work.

What Does “Value” Mean in Betting?

Finding value means identifying bets where you believe the true probability of an outcome is higher than what the odds suggest. For instance, if you think a team has a 60% chance to win, but the odds imply only a 50% chance, that’s a potential value bet.

Professional bettors spend a lot of time analyzing data, player performance, and market trends to find these small discrepancies. But even then, it’s not easy — sportsbooks have sophisticated models and adjust quickly to new information.

Why Do Odds Change?

Odds aren’t static. They shift constantly as new information becomes available — injuries, weather, lineup changes, or large bets from sharp players can all move the line.

If a lot of money comes in on one side, sportsbooks adjust the odds to balance their risk. That’s why the line you saw yesterday might look very different today. The betting market is dynamic, always trying to find the “true” price for each outcome.

Probability Is Not a Guarantee

Even when you understand probabilities, remember that they don’t guarantee results. A team with a 70% chance to win will still lose three out of ten times. Short-term results can be unpredictable, so it’s important to think long-term and not chase losses after a bad beat.

Sports betting is ultimately about understanding risk and probability — not predicting the future with certainty. The better you grasp what odds represent, the more realistic your expectations will be.

Bet Responsibly

Understanding odds and probabilities can make sports betting more interesting and analytical, but it doesn’t change the fact that betting always involves risk. Set limits on how much you wager, and treat it as entertainment — not a way to make money.
