But what do these numbers actually mean—and how do they relate to each other? Speed – the most visible number
Speed is the most obvious measure of performance. It tells you how fast you’re moving, usually measured in miles per hour (mph). But speed alone doesn’t tell the whole story. A cyclist might ride 25 mph on a flat road with a tailwind—or 15 mph uphill into a headwind—and in both cases be working extremely hard.
That’s why speed should always be viewed in context: terrain, wind, and road surface all play a role. In professional races, average speed is often used for comparison, but it’s the power numbers that reveal how much effort the riders are truly putting in.
Power – measuring your real effort
Power, measured in watts, shows how much energy you’re producing to move the bike forward. A power meter records how many watts you’re generating at the pedals, giving a precise picture of your physical output regardless of external conditions.
- A recreational rider might sustain 100–150 watts for a long ride.
- A well-trained amateur could hold 200–250 watts.
- A professional cyclist can push over 400 watts for extended periods—and exceed 1,000 watts in a sprint.
Power tells you how hard you’re working, not how fast you’re going. That makes it an essential tool for both training and racing, because it measures your actual effort rather than the conditions around you.
Heart rate – your body’s response
While power measures your output, heart rate measures your response. It shows how hard your heart is working to deliver oxygen to your muscles. Heart rate is influenced by many factors: fitness level, sleep, temperature, stress, and hydration.
By combining heart rate and power data, you can see how efficiently your body is performing. For example, if you’re producing the same power as before but with a lower heart rate, your fitness has improved. On the other hand, a high heart rate at low power might signal fatigue or overtraining.

A professional climber might sustain 6–7 W/kg for short periods—a level that requires elite fitness and physiology. For recreational riders, 3–4 W/kg is a solid goal.
